Two Sheffield Independents, One Collection: The Alternative Store × John's Van

Some collaborations make sense on paper. This one makes sense in your bones. The kind that only works when two things are genuinely rooted in the same place, the same community, and the same quiet pride in being Sheffield.

The Alternative Store × John's Van Collection is here. Here's the story behind it.

If You Know, You Know

Every city has its landmarks. Most of them are on maps, in guidebooks, on Instagram. But the best ones, the ones that actually matter, are held quietly by the people who found them. Word of mouth. Muscle memory. The kind of place you don't tell everyone about because part of what makes it special is that it feels like yours.

For anyone who has studied, worked, or spent any real time at the University of Sheffield, John's Van is one of those places.

It's been parked outside the Hicks Building most weekdays for almost 40 years. Think about that for a second. Nearly four decades of early mornings, exam seasons, late starts, and long days. And through all of it, the van has been there. Feeding students running between lectures. Staff grabbing a coffee before a 9am. Anyone who needed something hot, fast, and genuinely good to keep them going through whatever Sheffield's weather had decided to throw at them that morning.

The omelette sandwiches. The bacon rolls. The coffee that people still bring up years after graduating, in conversations that start with "do you remember..." The queues that snake back from the van during peak hours, long enough that you know this is somewhere worth waiting for, short enough that you always come back.

The van has earned a kind of love from Sheffield students that most businesses only dream about. Students have dressed as it for Halloween, full costume, the whole silver van. When the van was stolen, the outpouring of support stretched worldwide, from Sheffield to Gibraltar to the US, and gave John's Van a cult status it has never lost. The iconic silver van now features on murals around the university. John's Van merchandise is sold inside the Students' Union. There is even a café in the Arts Tower now, plus late night service, because when something becomes genuinely part of a place, it grows.

That's not a food van. That's a Sheffield institution.

Why These Two, Why Now

The Alternative Store has been part of Sheffield's independent scene for over 30 years. We make clothing rooted in Sheffield identity, Northern culture, and the kind of design philosophy that has nothing to do with what's trending this season.

When we say Sheffield, we mean it properly. The 0114 dialling code on our hoodies. The Sheff Tree, celebrating the fact that Sheffield has more trees per person than any other city in the UK. The People's Republic of South Yorkshire. The Northern Grit tee inspired by Stanage Edge and the climbers who have been pulling themselves up gritstone since before most brands existed. These aren't designs lifted from a mood board. They're pieces of the city we've been operating in for three decades. The same city, the same streets, the same independent spirit.

John's Van is cut from exactly the same cloth. Over 30 years serving the Sheffield community. Fast, freshly made food at prices that have always been fair. A business that grew not through marketing but through being genuinely good, genuinely consistent, and genuinely part of the place.

Two Sheffield independents. Both over 30 years in. Both embedded in the community rather than passing through it. Both with no interest in cutting corners to move faster.

That's the only kind of collaboration that ever made sense to us. When John's Van reached us, the chef loved our fabric quality, it wasn't because the timing was right or because collabs are having a moment. It was because these two things belong together in the same way that Sheffield belongs to the people who know it. Quietly, firmly, without needing to be explained.

The Collection

The Alternative × John's Van Collection is two pieces. Not a range, not a capsule drop with twelve SKUs. Two pieces, done properly, with a design that carries the spirit of the van rather than just borrowing its name.

The Hoodie

This is the centrepiece and honestly, it could stand alone.

Built from 350GSM heavyweight fabric in 85% organic ringspun combed cotton and 15% recycled polyester, with a soft brushed interior that's warm from the first wear. To put that weight in context: most brands build their "premium" hoodies at 280GSM. This is 25% heavier. You feel it when you pick it up. You feel it when you put it on. It drapes properly, holds its shape through washing, and gets better rather than worse with regular wear.

The fit is relaxed and modern. Roomy enough to layer over a thermal or a sweatshirt, structured enough to wear on its own without looking shapeless. The collab design sits on the front and back, in-house exclusive, printed to last.

This isn't a novelty hoodie. It's the kind of piece you keep for years because it earns its place. The fact that it carries Sheffield's most beloved food van on the chest is the point. And for the right person, that makes it genuinely irreplaceable.

The T-Shirt

The everyday companion. Made from 100% organic ringspun cotton at 180GSM, lightweight, soft, and breathable enough for all-day wear across every season. Same in-house collab design, same limited-run status, a different weight for different days.

Wear it on its own through spring and summer. Layer it under the hoodie when Sheffield decides it's still January in April. Keep both. They were designed to work together.

Both pieces are unisex. No men's/women's split. Made for anyone who knows what John's Van means to them, regardless of who they are.

This Is a Limited Run. We Mean It.

The collection is produced in limited quantities. Once it sells out, it won't return.

We know every brand says this. We're saying it because it's true and because we've watched it happen with our own releases before. The moment passes, the stock goes, and people who waited wish they hadn't. The John's Van collab will be no different.

We'd rather be straight with you than watch you miss it.

If you want it, get it now. Not tomorrow. Now.

A Note for the Sheffield Expats

Here's something we've noticed over the years of running this brand: some of our most loyal customers aren't in Sheffield anymore.

They're in London, in Manchester, in Sydney, in Toronto. People who came to Sheffield to study or work, stayed longer than they planned, fell in love with the place in that way Sheffield makes you do, and then left with something of it still in them. They wear the 0114 hoodie because it's the only dialling code that feels like home. They buy the Sheff Tree tee because they miss walking through Endcliffe Park. They come back to The Alternative Store because it's one of the few places that speaks to that very specific feeling of belonging somewhere you no longer live.

The John's Van collab is for you. Maybe especially for you.

Because the Van Queue is a very particular Sheffield memory. The cold morning outside the Hicks Building, the smell of bacon from fifteen metres away, the way the omelette sandwich somehow fixed whatever the previous night had done to you. That's not something you find anywhere else. And wearing it on your chest, wherever in the world you happen to be, is as close as clothing gets to carrying home with you.

Wherever you are. This is a piece of where you're from.
