Our story
Our story begins with Stu having finished university in Nottingham many decades ago. Having completed a lengthy work placement with a large industrial company, he knew a 9-5 day to day structure wasn't for him, instead opting not to continue with the
company and go travelling in Central America.

It was here in 1989, amongst the temples, pyramids and jungles of Guatemala, that the idea for The Alternative Store was sown. A couple of years later and back amongst the hills of Sheffield, The Alternative Store was born. Various store units, recessions and a pandemic later we're still here.

The Alternative Store differs from the normal, designed to present an alternative to the big chains and to serve the subcultures of the U.K.

Home to designs such as 0114, the People's Republic of South Yorkshire and Steel City, we operate and retail The Alternative Brand from our central Sheffield based store. The Alternative Store has an exciting variety of men's clothing, women's clothing, unisex clothing, oversized t shirts and of course, our Northern, Yorkshire t shirts and Sheffield t shirts., sweatshirts and hoodies
